Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating TODAY June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

June 14, Flag Day 2012, is a good day to honor the Flag--and to use as a start date for re-invigorating the demand on Congress to pass the "Flag Amendment" proposed by The American Legion and its Citizens Flag Alliance, and send it to the States for a ratification vote of the people to accept or reject it.
ReplyDeleteThe Flag Amendment would simply Amend the Constitution to provide that Congress shall have the authority to adopt legislation to protect the Flag from desecration. It would not prescribe the specific language of such legislation, which would be left to Congress to decide.
